Before I wrote that title, I had to go back to my calendar to be sure I was not making a mistake. I mean, I just received that congratulatory email when? …5 days ago?

November started out interesting as we got ready to be shared into our various stacks and explore JavaScript library — React (frontend fellows). We began the first week learning about Data Structures and Algorithms. We worked with different data structures such as: Arrays, Hash tables, Linked lists, Stacks and Queues, Trees and Graphs etc. We also learnt the following under algorithms: Recursion, Sorting, Searching & Traversal, Dynamic Programming etc.

The second week saw us picking up Node basics: Node Architecture, Node Module System, Node Package Manager and Dev dependencies etc. On the third and fourth week we dived fully into React. Starting from React basics: components, JSX, props and styling(custom CSS and CSS frameworks) to state management, events and context API.

Remember what I said about Friday being the best day of the week thanks to the entire TIIDELab team especially Mr Shamsudeen Aderoju. Well, this November was packed with awesome sessions, we started from appreciative communication principles and the 4d Cycle on the first week. We got a surprise visit from the Vice President, Tech Specialist Consulting Limited, Mr Lanre Yusuf. It was an eye-opening session as he took us through the nitty-gritty of working with clients. He talked to us about requirements specification, definition/scoping, analysis and documentation. He also shared his personal experiences and guides for making pertinent decisions in our career.

On the second Friday, we were taken on goal setting: SMART, SWOT and PEST analysis and Pareto Principle (80–20 rule). We also had a Guest Leader series which featured Mr Ayomide Oyekanmi. We had interesting conversations on his developer journey: tech experience, challenges and lessons learnt.

For the third week, we learnt about Public Speaking concepts: Nancy Duarte’s structure of a great speech, speech delivery and speech structure methods. We also had a Model UN Assembly where I represented Brazil and gave a speech on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and solutions to recovery. We all deliberated on the submissions of every other country and documented our resolutions.

On the Friday of the last week of November, we treated Negotiation and Mediation skills: concepts and types of negotiation, negotiation process and strategies, Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (BATNA) and Zone of Possible Agreement (ZOPA). We also discussed mediation skills, conflict resolution and processes. We were broken into teams and my team carried out an interesting activity where we attempted to resolve the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) versus Federal Government conflict.

Finally, I am really glad I made it to the last month. I started out with mixed feelings but at this point, I really wish I could take this experience on with me longer than this. I would forever be grateful to the amazing TIIDELab team and all who have contributed to the success of the program so far.

Thank you for taking this walk through November with me, see you in the next one. Excelsior!
